Oct. 2008 -- The government approved and passed a 30% tax credit for both commercial and residential purchases for renewable energy systems (including solar). This tax credit was set to expire in December of 2008 but was passed to remain in place for an additional 8 years. This is excellent news for both homeowners and businesses; it also shows that renewable energy and more specifically solar energy are important and valuable enough to warrant the government's financial incentives to push this energy into the main stream. To find out more about financial incentives offered at both the federal and state level, visit the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency (DSIRE) site: federal incentives, and incentives by state.
